Interviewed by D&AD’s Head of Content, Laura Havlin, the session offered a retrospective of Saville’s career, from unprecedented autonomy at Factory Records to regeneration in Greater Manchester, and his unique approach to authorship and design.

While acknowledging the unique circumstances that offered such early creative freedom, his words were a reminder of the importance of retaining personal integrity, identity and belief in our work — or risk falling out of love with design and communication — a tightrope that creatives will always be treading. Saville emphasised that it’s crucial to hold on to our core values, both from a moral and design perspective, and in fact it’s this ‘personal’ stamp inside the confines of a creative brief that often makes the most unique work.

His story underlines that genuine, impactful design stems from a deep-seated conviction and a clear sense of purpose. Saville’s iconic work, driven by this commitment to authenticity, serves as an inspiration for us all to maintain integrity while navigating the often challenging and ever changing creative world. In truth, the same could be said for every industry or vocation.

This talk was part of D&AD Festival 2024, bringing together some of the industry’s leading voices to celebrate creative excellence, and provide a deep dive into the ideas and tools that are shaping the future.
